Oslo WB protests News summary, J22

Eirik F. indymedia.no | 23.06.2002 03:52

Summary of events; June 22nd.

Party and spoof tabloid:
The protests opened yesterday evening with an informal party and concert at the Oslo YaBasta! collective. The Norwegian faction of Adbusters network launched their 'VB' newspaper, imitating the style of the country's largest tabloid ("VG") but with content on the world bank. 10.000 copies are being spread through central Oslo; cafè and shop owners have happily been distributing it.
Police, Protesters issues joint statement encouraging media responsibility
In a joint press release, the Oslo2002 Network and the Oslo ask the media to "act responsibly" and not not needlessly increase tensions and expectations of violence before the protests.
Housing issue solved
The desperate search for accomodation, following the City's cancellation of contracts for school rent, is finally over. Visiting protesters are offered private accomodation by Oslo citizens.
Indymedia investigates corporate media distortions
Choosing an investigative approach to the corporate media, an IMC activist called Norways second-largest tabloid to question the reliability of their sources for reports forewshadowing violence. He got some interesting answers, notably that the tabloids apparently rely on unsabstantiated rumours from anonymous police sources.
Laidback police, disappointed media: Peacefull Blitz demo
A demonstration organised by autonomous house "Blitz", protesting state surveilance and controll was held peacefully, much to the disappointment of corporate media who have consistently painted Blitz as the ultimate bogeymen. The first test of police strategy showed positive signs; the police were unprovocative, and mostly invisible. Head count: 250.
Japanase Peace Boat docks in Oslo
The Japanese Peace Boat, carrying 600 peace activists, docked in Oslo at 0800 and stayed for ten intense hours of speaches and meetings with Norwegian academics, NGOs and politicians.
Kenneth Kaunda arrives
Kenneth Kaunda, former Zambian president and IMF/WB opponent arrived in Oslo to participate in the counter-conference on Sunday J23. An NTB newswire interview with Kaunda, where he describes the WB as a new form of slavery, was widely reprinted in the corporate media.
Debt relief action attracts attention
Simultaneously with the Blitz demo (above), SLUG - a Norwegian equivalent of Jubilee, held a "remote control" action for debt relief. Toy cars, illustrating countries in the grip of the World Bank, were steered by remote control through a shaky path.

At 11.00. pm the first arrest in relation to the ABCDE countersummit took place. A swedish national 18 years old who had been arrested in Gothenburg but had no conviction against him. He was arrested and taken to the Groenland politikammer, because he was in the Schengen register. For more info, please read indymedia.no
